March is prom season.
Some clients bring in a dress and say, “It’s simple. Just shorten the length.”
No beeds. No visible layers No heavy decoration. It looks cleans and minimal. But in my experience, that is where mistakes begin. When a dress is long, small imbalances are easy to miss. Once it is shortened, they become visible.
The front may rise slightly. The sides may not fall evenly. The fabric may pull differently once the weight changes.
Even without obvious layers, there is lining inside. There is fabric grain. There is structure.
When the length changes the balance of the whole dress changes.
Hemming is not just removing inches. It is adjusting proportion on the body — with the actual shoes, with natural posture, with movement.
A dress that look simple can still require careful fitting.
In my experience, guessing the length at home is one of the most common mistakes during prom season.
“심플해 보이는데요” — 프람 드레스 수선에서 자주 생기는 실수.
3월은 프람 시즌입니다. 손님이 드레스를 가져오며 이렇게 말합니다. “심플해요. 길이만 줄이면 될 것 같아요.”
비즈도 없고, 눈에 보이는 레이어도 없고, 장식도 없습니다. 깔끔해 보입니다. 하지만 제 경험으로는 바로 그 지점에서 실수가 시작됩니다.
길 때는 잘 보이지 않던 불균형이 줄이고 나면 드러납니다. 앞이 살짝 올라가기도 하고, 옆선이 맞지 않게 보이기도 합니다.
무게가 달라지면서 원단의 떨어지는 방향이 바뀌기도 합니다. 겉으로는 단순해 보여도 안감이 있고, 원단의 결이 있고, 보이지 않는 구조가 있습니다.
길이를 바꾸면 드레스 전체의 균형이 달라집니다. 밑단 수선은 단순히 인치를 줄이는 일이 아니라 몸 위에서 비율을 다시 맞추는 직업입니다.
겉보기에는 심플해 보여도 신중한 피팅이 필요합니다. 제 경험으로는 집에서 길이를 미리 정해 오는 것이 프람 시즌에 흔한 실수 중 하나입니다.
